Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in your life. Nothing is more rewarding than the privilege of caring for this new life and providing an environment in which both you and your child will thrive and develop. Choosing the pediatrician that can best care for your child is an important decision. At Amherst Pediatric Associates we share your joy and enthusiasm and look forward to the opportunity in partnering with you on the exciting journey of raising a child.
Please feel free to call our office if you have additional questions about us. Or, if you prefer, we offer a prenatal "meet and greet" class at 6pm on the second Wednesday of every month. If you are interested in attending one of these classes please call us to register.
When your baby is born at an affiliated hospital, simply tell your obstetrician and the hospital staff that you have chosen Amherst Pediatric Associates as your child's pediatrician. Our office will be notified of your baby's birth by the hospital staff. Upon discharge, please contact our office about scheduling your baby's first visit to our office.
The first checkup of a newborn baby is within the first week of age. This visit is primarily meant to confirm the normality of the baby and to ascertain the degree of success the mother is having in caring for the newborn at home. Also, before coming in for the first visit, please take time to check your medical insurance coverage for your baby. Be sure the baby is enrolled as a dependent on your insurance plan. Also, if your insurance company requires a primary care physician (PCP) be listed, please list one of our doctors as PCP for your child prior to being seen. Please bring your insurance card with you so we can scan the information and call your insurance company to find out about copays/deductibles that you may incur.
Weight checks are typical for newborn babies. During the first month of life, we monitor the babies very closely for adequate nutrition and weight gain. Weight checks may be scheduled with one of the newborn nurses or with a doctor. The contacts between you and our newborn nurses in the first several weeks will help to determine the need for weight checks.
